Parks And Rec Filibuster Episode
Posted in:admin
Club. Parks And Recreation returns tonight with an unintended double length episode after an unexpected month long hiatus, all of which is a side effect of NBCs decision to cancel Welcome To The Family after just three episodes. It might feel slightly wrong to air the Halloween themed Recall Vote in the middle of Novemberalthough, honestly, Halloween is more in the background here than it has been in previous such episodesbut the more obvious impact of pairing these two episodes is felt when the recall results come in. After all, Filibuster is the ultimate encapsulation of who Leslie Knope is as a councilwoman, tirelessly standing up for the rights of others against tremendous odds and at great cost to herself. Even in the moment, her defeat of Jeremy Jamm feels like a pyrrhic victory, but its still a moment to feel good about, if only because it leaves Leslie in the mood for some unspeakable, roller skate themed fun with her husband. If the schedule had played out the way it was meant to, Leslie would have had a week to bask in the glow of that one final victory. As it plays out tonight, she gets recalled less than 1. The themes explored in Filibuster and Recall Vote are closely related its just that one story takes a positive view while the other is more negative. The first episode is all about the characters identifying their potential, while the second episode is concerned with the limits of that potential. As April wisely tells a scared Andy in Filibuster, everyone is just faking their way through until they figure it out Leslie is improvising a political last stand of questionable wisdom, Tom is trying to prove himself worthy of Nadias affections, and Ron is going to kill as many deerreal or virtualas it takes until his hunting prowess is affirmed once and for all. Everybody who gets a subplot in Filibuster has something to prove, and all of them achieve their goals, give or take Andy who does at least find his wallet and possibly some dumpster noodles. This is Parks And Recreation at its most hopelessly, unapologetically optimistic. Sure, its never a surprise when Ron triumphs over anything, and Tom does at least demonstrate a sense of humor and just barely enough maturity that it might make sense for Nadia to remain interested in him, even after she returns from her vacationor Doctors Without Borders mission, same differenceto Rwanda, which Tom is fairly sure is full of rich guys who will buy her whatever she wants. Its not that its so unlikely that Tom could ever seem like boyfriend material to Nadia, but the key is that the episode allows Tom to present the best side of himself. The more straightforwardly funny option for this subplot would likely have been for Tom to make a complete ass of himself, but Filibuster prefers to build up chemistry between the characters and mine a mix of comedic and emotionally satisfying moments, which is very Parks And Recreation. When Kristen Bell shows up at the end as former Eagleton councilwoman Ingrid de Forest to tell Leslie she is her constituencys candidate in the recall election, this could be one last little coda of defeat, a tough reminder of the fact that Leslie is surrounded by political opponents. But Ingrid thanks Leslie for her selfless and asks her out for a celebratory plate of. Leslie sure as hell isnt perfect, something that the show has acknowledged at points this season, most notably in Doppelgangers. But both her faults and her strengths are simply not those of a career politician. If shes going to lose, perhaps it is best that she loses on a matter of principle, rather than as a result of some silly gaffe or lapse in judgment. Even when Leslie is defeated, at least it happens in the service of doing the right thing. And yet, that idea doesnt really carry over to Recall Vote, where Leslie loses and loses hard. This is her biggest setback since she was forced to break up with Ben at the beginning of season four, and even that doesnt really compare to her defeat here. At least the situation with Ben could mostly be blamed on external factors the two lovers made some dumb mistakes, yes, but their problems could be traced back to Chris rule about workplace romances, which certainly wasnt devised with Ben and Leslie specifically in mind. In contrast, this episode sees Leslie face the judgment of the people of Pawnee, and they find her wanting. Honestly, this was probably the only realistic result. As Leslie reads to herself toward the end of the episode, the recall movement had a huge financial advantage, and its always easier to get people to vote against somebody than for them, particularly in ultra low turnout affairs like city council recall elections. This was also the only result that really makes sense in terms of how the Parks And Recreation creative team has structured this season. Leslies unabashed idealism and her tendency to lose focus have always made her political ambitions a longshot season four only justified her narrow victory over Bobby Newport after her transcendent closing speech in The Debate. The show has given Leslie no such moment of reckoning this year, except possibly her decision to spearhead the effort to save Eagleton. But if that was meant to feel like an impressive, career making moment, it never really landed as such, and anyway, Leslie lost any hope of Eagleton specific support in Filibuster. Defeat really is the only logical endpoint for this arc, and Recall Vote spends a lot of time examining just what that means for Leslie. As it turns out, it means a massive depressive episodeone she draws Ben into as he realizes that he too may have already peakedand a trip to Pawnees most terrifying pawnshop for some unlicensed tattoos. It isnt just Leslie and Ben who think they may have reached their peak, as Tom again struggles with whether its time to give up on his Rent a Swag dreams and sell out to Jean Ralphios dad. In his way, Ron, too, must recognize the limits of what he can accomplish with his furniture making, as Pawnees local tastemaker Annabel Porter Childrens Hospitals Erinn Hayes declares his chair one of the citys top trends. Incidentally, theres no better proof that Recall Vote is all about how to deal with failure than the fact that Pawnees most influential voice is a former phonebook model whose major life accomplishment is spending a few months in Kate Bosworths beach house. There just isnt a whole lot of room for success in a city where someone like Annabel Porter holds near dictatorial sway. Returning to Ron, its not that he is ever even remotely tempted by the idea of countless Chinese children making official knockoffs of his handmade chairs, but that in itself is instructive. Ron understands who he wants to be, and since hes basically that person already, he doesnt feel the need to chase any greater dream. Leslie, Ben, and Tom dont yet have that peace of mind, and so they end up defining themselves more of in terms of their achievements. That makes the prospect that they have already achieved as much as they can ever hope to deeply scary, and its an open question whether any of them really finds the right path forward. Tom does end up selling Rent a Swag, justifying his business decision on the grounds that he now has the seed money for his next business venture, even though that was pretty much the only good idea Tom has ever come up with. Ben does little more than sober up and move forward, while Leslie decideswith some much needed prompting from Annthat she should make the most of her final 3. The 1. 0 All Time Best Episodes Of. The final episode of its final seventh season airs tonight, and in tribute, its biggest fans on The Playlist staffin the world have tried to wrestle our infinite love for the show into just ten episodes. Its not an easy task. For once, however, we do not fear death threats amid a fan backlash in the comments, because the special alchemy of. Anyway, in being one of the nicest shows on TV, it also has the nicest fans we should know, were just a few of the people whove been made better, if rather more sentimental, by continued exposure to the lovely folk at the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana. We will miss them and the warm smushy feeling theyve given us week in and week out immensely, but when it gets to be too much, good to know we can go back to the well anytime, most probably starting with one of these ten episodes. Hunting Trip Season 2, Episode 1. Famously, Parks Rec didnt come flying out of the gate. It began with an uneven, rushed, truncated first season that saw the writers visibly struggling with how to make Leslie Knope work, and finding it tricky to stand apart from The Office. Ironically, The Office had virtually the same issues, and as in the case of that show, season two saw things massively improve almost from the start, with opener Pawnee Zoo becoming an almost markedly different show. The seeds of greatness were laid throughout, and Ron Tammy might be the first perfect episode of the series though weve left it out in favor of its sequel, which you can find below, but Hunting Trip, a few installments later, is probably the first to really take advantage of one of the shows greatest weapons its killer ensemble. Mutant X Season 1 Episode 1 there. Pivoting around the heart of the show, in the relationship between. Amy Poehler. Already having his favorite day of the year ruined, things go much worse when Ron is winged by a bullet, which Leslie ends up taking responsibility for. Aside from Paul Schneider. But its really a Leslie and Ron episode, and the way that his anger turns into grudging respect as he realizes that shes been covering for someone else is one of the first great demonstrations of the big beating heart of the show. Plus you get some killer Poehler improv as she throws off the suspicions of a park ranger by playing into his condescending stereotyping of women, and the first flourishings of the shows best love story, between Aubrey Plaza. Penned by Amy Poehler herself, it sees Leslie spearheading the graveyard slot of Pawnees annual anti obesity telethon sponsored, of course, by the towns vaguely sinister, sugar pushing local corporation, Sweetums. The shows the closest thing weve ever gotten to a live action Simpsons Golden Age writers like Mike Scully worked on. But the focus here is on the main cast, as it should be, and you really sense the writers and the performers start to hit their stride a sleep deprived Leslie tries to battle through, Ron sleep fights and bores viewers so much with his chair making workshop that the telethon counter starts going backwards one of those surreal touches that could risk breaking the show, but still somehow works tonally, Tom getting hammered with NBA star Detleft Schrempf who became a regular guest star, Gerry being the butt of everyones jokes, April and Andys burgeoning romance, etc. Even Paul Schneider gets some material for once, as he attempts to propose live on air to Rashida Jones. The show was about to evolve Schneider would leave two episodes later, and in the very next one, Rob Lowe and Adam Scott joined the cast, helping the show reach its perfect form. But even before them, it was clear from an episode like Telethon that this was going to be a series for the ages. It also features one of Mouserats finest hours, with the performance of their anthem Sex Hair, a song title that Spinal Tap would be proud of. Terse of manner, right of wing, Selleckian of. Swansons appeal, so perfectly encapsulated by Offerman, is largely down to how you just know that hes the guy whose politics and worldview least resemble those of the writers of the show Emily Kapnek on this episode, yet hes also the one whom they love the most. And when you create such a pillar of strength, manliness and libertarian ideals, the essential RandianNietzschean Superman of Pawnee, the most illuminating thing you can do with him is introduce him to his Kryptonite. Enter Tammy 2, played by Offermans real life main squeeze Megan Mullally their genuine chemistry and comedic synergy is palpable as Rons psychotic horndog librarian ex wife, whom wed already encountered in Season 2 but who gets her greatest moment here. Mullally, best known as the best thing in Will Grace, doesnt actually have that much screen time though her intro, as she seductively slaps a strip of beef jerky against her face, is one for the ages, but the effect of her is everywhere, as Ron is sucked into her orbit and other parts again. Remarried, incarcerated, sporting gangsta cornrows and entirely emasculated we see it all happen via one of those classic. As is the way when Tammy 2 shows up, subplots are kind of blasted off the screen, but the introduction of Bens thing for calzones and everyones absolute disgust at that is a nice little sparkly bit. Still, the full beam glare goes to Ron and Tammy 2, the ultimate addictive but bad for you hookup. April Andys Fancy Party Season 3, Episode 9 TV weddings are usually big deals people love weddings, and network executives doubly so, promo ing the hell out of any episode that features two characters in a church for weeks in advance. April and Chris Pratt. And only a handful of episodes later, they invite the rest of the cast to a party at their house, before letting slip that its actually their secret, spontaneous, foolhardy wedding ceremony. Watch Tarzan And The Lost City Mediafire'>Watch Tarzan And The Lost City Mediafire. The result is the single most romantic episode of a show that, while it wasnt ever driven by dating and love lives the way that, say, How I Met Your Mother was, could be swooningly sweet in its finest moments despite Leslies fears, and the sheer impulsiveness of the decision I cannot emphasize how little weve thought about this, Andy says in his speech, its clear that the pair are perfect for each other, and their marriage has smartly remained one of the strongest on television ever since. But this also isnt some saccharine tissue fest either for all its big heartedness, this also remains one of the funniest episodes of From the movie Nell Donna asks her, after seeing some of the worst small talk in history. Its almost impossible to pick out the absolute best half hour of the show, but this makes a very, very good argument. The Fight Season 3, Episode 1. Even lesser seasons of. And this episode is just such a case. Like so many of the best moments of. Here its the launch of Toms newest venture Snake Juice, a dubiously potent alcoholic beverage that gets the entire gang nutso drunk, and contributes to a fabulously well observed passiveaggressive, then aggressiveaggressive spat between Leslie and Ann. Of the forest of subplots, the best is April and Andys roleplay, as Janet Snakehole and Bert Macklin respectively, though irregular cast members like The Douche and the invaluable Jean Ralphio also get some love, particularly the latter with his inability to end his spontaneous raps on the obvious rhyme Gonna turn that frizz own upside diddidy. The epic night culminates in one of the funniest montages. But if anything the episode gets even better afterward, unlike Snake Juice, as the gang try to work through the issues and the monumental hangovers that the night brought up.
